Angeleno Plum | C #55/60's | Disfrute® | Spain | C-MDR ±9 Kg
The Angeleno plum (Prunus salicina Lindl.) is a premium late-season Japanese plum cultivar recognized for its deep-purple, nearly black skin, yellow flesh, firm texture and naturally sweet flavor. Grown in Spain and marketed under the Disfrute® brand, Angeleno stands out for its rounded shape, attractive color contrast and excellent postharvest storage potential.
Its approximately 9 Kg wooden box, size 55/60 presentation is particularly suitable for fresh produce retailers, supermarkets, restaurants, hotels and specialty fruit markets. Its firmness and balanced sweetness make it appealing for both fresh consumption and a wide variety of culinary applications.
Organoleptic Properties
Medium to large fruit with a rounded, slightly flattened shape and smooth skin ranging from reddish purple to deep purple, becoming almost black as characteristic coloration develops. The surface may display a delicate natural waxy bloom, creating a slightly bluish appearance.
The flesh ranges from yellow to golden yellow, with a very firm, compact, fleshy, juicy and pleasantly crisp texture. Its flavor is sweet, aromatic and well balanced, with mild acidity that adds freshness. Varietal references describe soluble solids levels near 12–14 °Brix, depending on maturity and growing conditions. External skin coloration may develop before the fruit reaches optimum eating quality, so color alone should not be used to determine ripeness.
Suggested Uses
Ideal for fresh consumption, snacks, fruit salads, bowls, yogurt, oatmeal, fruit platters and desserts. Its firm flesh allows attractive slices and wedges that maintain their structure during preparation.
In baking and pastry applications, Angeleno is especially suitable for tarts, galettes, crumbles, cakes, compotes, jams, sauces and baked plums. It can also be roasted, caramelized or lightly sautéed and served with ice cream, cream, honey or nuts.
In contemporary cuisine, it pairs particularly well with goat cheese, burrata, brie, pecans, almonds, rosemary, thyme and balsamic vinegar. Its sweet, gently tart flavor makes it an excellent ingredient for sweet-and-savory dishes featuring pork, duck and poultry, as well as chutneys and fruit reductions.
Format
Wooden box (C-MDR) containing approximately 9 Kg of fresh Angeleno plums, Disfrute® brand, originating from Spain.
Size #55/60: commercial fruit-size classification associated with an approximate diameter of 55–60 mm, consistent with varietal references for Angeleno. Actual sizing range, uniformity and tolerances should follow the packer's specifications.
Fruit count, individual weight and internal arrangement may vary according to the lot. Because fresh plums are susceptible to handling damage, excessive compression should be avoided during transportation and retail display.
Storage and Handling
For commercial storage, maintain preferably at approximately -1 to 0 °C (30–32 °F) and 90–95% relative humidity, preserving an uninterrupted cold chain. Angeleno is particularly valued for its excellent refrigerated storage potential, one of the characteristics supporting its international commercial success.
Plums are climacteric fruits and continue ripening after harvest in response to ethylene. Avoid impacts, compression, moisture loss and temperature fluctuations. Prolonged exposure to intermediate temperatures of approximately 2–8 °C (36–46 °F) may contribute to physiological disorders, including internal browning, mealiness and flavor deterioration. For household consumption, allow overly firm fruit to ripen at room temperature and refrigerate once the desired eating texture is reached.
Quality and Selection Criteria
Select plums that are well developed, firm, plump, uniformly shaped and characteristically dark-skinned, without severe bruising, cracks, mold, decay or excessive dehydration.
The flesh should display yellow coloration, a fleshy texture, adequate juiciness and balanced sweetness, without internal browning, fermentation or mealiness. Slight softness may indicate eating maturity, while greater firmness is normal in fruit intended for later ripening.
The delicate whitish or bluish waxy bloom is a natural protective coating and should not be mistaken for a defect. Since Angeleno can develop dark skin coloration before reaching optimal internal maturity, firmness, sugar content and flesh quality should also be considered during selection.
Season
Angeleno is a very late-ripening plum cultivar. In Spain, harvesting generally takes place during September, with timing varying according to production region, altitude and seasonal weather conditions.
Thanks to its excellent storage capacity, Angeleno may remain commercially available during October, November and part of December, depending on postharvest management and refrigerated storage conditions. This characteristic helps extend the availability of European-grown plums after many other cultivars have completed their harvest season.
Origin
Spain.
The Angeleno plum, also identified in varietal references as Suplumsix, was developed in California, United States, through Japanese plum breeding and selection programs. Although its cultivar origin is American, Angeleno found favorable growing conditions in European production regions such as Spain, where it has become an important late-season commercial variety.
One of its most distinctive characteristics is that its skin can develop an almost black appearance while the flesh remains yellow, creating a striking natural contrast. Its most remarkable commercial advantage, however, is its exceptional storage potential, with technical references describing periods of up to 75 days under suitable refrigerated conditions, depending on initial fruit quality and postharvest handling. This combination of firm texture, attractive appearance and late-season maturity has established Angeleno as a valuable cultivar for extending the fresh plum marketing season.
