Fantasy ornamental gourd mix grown in Guanajuato, Mexico, selected for its diversity of natural shapes, colors, textures and patterns. Commercial mixtures known as ornamental gourds or fancy gourds are commonly composed primarily of Cucurbita pepo types, although an individual commercial mix may contain multiple cultivars or species. These small, visually distinctive fruits are primarily intended for seasonal decoration, fall displays, Halloween and Día de Muertos.
Organoleptic Properties
As an ornamental mix, considerable natural variation occurs among individual fruits. Shapes may be round, flattened, oval, pear-shaped, elongated or crowned; surfaces may be smooth, ribbed or warty; and colors may include green, yellow, orange, cream and white, as well as striped, bicolored and mottled patterns. This diversity of shapes and colors is one of the defining commercial characteristics of ornamental gourds.
Suggested Uses
Primarily intended for ornamental use. Ideal for fall, Halloween and Día de Muertos decorations, centerpieces, retail displays, restaurants, hotels, events, decorative baskets, produce displays and seasonal residential or commercial arrangements. Properly cured gourds may also be incorporated into dried arrangements and craft projects.

Storage and Handling
Store in a cool, dry and well-ventilated environment, avoiding condensation, impact damage and prolonged exposure to moisture. As a general reference for mature squash and pumpkin types, temperatures around 12.5–15 °C (55–59 °F) help maintain quality, while temperatures below approximately 10 °C (50 °F) may cause chilling injury in susceptible Cucurbita types. For decorative use, maintaining a dry surface and adequate air circulation helps reduce decay.
Quality and Selection Criteria
Whole, firm, mature and visually attractive fruit with well-developed rinds and characteristic coloration. Diversity and contrast in shape, color and surface texture are particularly desirable, together with intact stems when applicable. Fruit should be free from soft areas, decay, mold, deep wounds or significant mechanical damage that could reduce its decorative life.

Many small decorative gourds displaying unusual colors and shapes belong to Cucurbita pepo and are traditionally marketed in mixtures that may include pear, egg, bicolor, crown-of-thorns, spoon, miniature and warted types, among others. Unlike squash specifically selected for culinary use, the primary commercial attribute of the Fantasy mix is its ornamental value. Unless the grower specifically identifies the edible cultivars included in the lot, it is preferable to market the assortment for decorative use only and not recommend it for consumption.
