Red Globe Grapes | CAT. 1 | #XL | Unifrutti® | Peru | C-PLS ±8.2 Kg

Red Globe (Vitis vinifera L.) is a premium red seeded table grape cultivar internationally recognized for its exceptionally large, round berries, pinkish-red to purplish-red skin, and firm, fleshy, juicy pulp. Grown in Peru and marketed under the Unifrutti® brand in Category I, size #XL, these grapes stand out for their generous clusters, attractive presentation and naturally sweet, delicate flavor.

Unlike many modern seedless table grape cultivars, Red Globe contains fully developed seeds, an inherent characteristic of the variety. Its impressive berry size and attractive appearance make it particularly appealing for fresh consumption, retail fruit displays and professional foodservice.

Organoleptic Properties

Large to extra-large, generally spherical berries, with a reference commercial diameter of approximately 25–27 mm, although larger sizes may be achieved depending on growing conditions and selection. Skin is relatively durable, ranging from pinkish red to deep red or purplish red, sometimes displaying a delicate natural whitish waxy bloom.

The flesh is translucent greenish to pale, firm, juicy and fleshy, with a pleasantly crisp bite. Flavor is sweet, refreshing and mild, with moderate acidity and a delicate aromatic profile. Red Globe contains natural seeds, commonly two to four per berry, although the number may vary. Varietal references describe berries averaging approximately 13 g and soluble solids levels around 13–16 °Brix, depending on maturity, climate and commercial selection.

Suggested Uses

Ideal for fresh consumption, fruit platters, buffets, hotels, restaurants, events, salads and gourmet presentations. The generous berry size creates a particularly attractive appearance for retail displays and fruit arrangements.

In contemporary cuisine, Red Globe grapes can be incorporated into salads with cheese, nuts and leafy greens, meat accompaniments, sweet-and-savory dishes, desserts and compotes. They pair especially well with goat cheese, brie, pecans, almonds, honey, rosemary and balsamic vinegar. For preparations intended for children or consumers who prefer seedless fruit, the seeds should be removed before serving.

Format

Plastic crate (C-PLS) containing approximately 8.2 Kg of fresh Red Globe grapes, Unifrutti® brand, originating from Peru.

Commercial classification CAT. 1 (Category I), indicating a quality selection subject to applicable appearance, soundness, uniformity and defect-tolerance specifications for the destination market.

Size #XL (Extra Large), identifying a selection of extra-large berries. As a Peruvian market reference, some exporters use a diameter range of approximately 25–26.9 mm for XL Red Globe grapes; actual size requirements must be confirmed against the packer's specifications.

Storage and Handling

For commercial storage, maintain preferably at approximately -1 to 0 °C (30–32 °F) and 90–95% relative humidity, preserving an uninterrupted cold chain. These conditions help retain berry firmness, stem freshness and juiciness.

Avoid impacts, excessive compression, condensation, moisture loss and temperature fluctuations. Maintain appropriate airflow and follow the packer's protective packaging and postharvest treatment instructions. For household consumption, keep refrigerated and wash only immediately before eating.

Quality and Selection Criteria

Select large, well-formed clusters with round, firm, plump and characteristically red berries, securely attached to their stems. Stems should remain in good condition, without excessive dehydration or mold.

The flesh should exhibit a fleshy texture, abundant juiciness and balanced sweetness, without fermentation, abnormal softening or off-flavors. Avoid split berries, leakage, decay, pronounced shriveling and excessive berry shatter. The natural waxy bloom may appear as a fine whitish film on the skin and is a normal characteristic of fresh grapes.

Season

Red Globe is a mid- to late-ripening table grape cultivar. In Peru, its season varies according to production area, growing conditions and export programs. Commercial availability is generally concentrated between November and March, although certain production regions, including the Chincha Valley in Ica, may continue harvesting into March or April.

Peruvian production complements Northern Hemisphere supply, providing fresh table grapes to international markets during winter and early spring.

Origin

Peru.

The Red Globe cultivar was developed by researchers Harold P. Olmo and Albert T. Koyama at the University of California, Davis, through a conventional breeding program combining selections related to the Emperor, Hunisia and Nocera grape varieties. It was commercially released in 1980 and received a United States plant patent in 1981.

One of its most remarkable characteristics is that Red Globe represents a generation of table grapes selected primarily for exceptionally large berries, attractive clusters and good transport performance, qualities that supported its expansion into major export-producing regions, including Peru.

Although seedless grapes now occupy an important position in international markets, Red Globe remains a classic seeded red table grape, appreciated for its impressive berry size, fleshy texture, mild sweetness and distinctive visual appeal.
