Format
Bulk per Kilogram), size #100's, corresponding to approximately 100 apples per carton, subject to the packer's final configuration and net weight.
Storage and Handling
Store at approximately 0–2 °C (32–36 °F) and 90–95% relative humidity, maintaining a consistent cold chain. Protect fruit from impact, excessive compression and moisture loss. Granny Smith has excellent storage potential, particularly under commercial refrigeration and controlled-atmosphere conditions, allowing it to retain its characteristic firmness and crisp texture for extended periods.
Quality and Selection Criteria
Select whole, clean, firm and well-developed fruit with good uniformity within the commercial size. Skin should display the variety's characteristic intense green coloration, without severe bruising, open wounds, decay, dehydration or significant damage. Flesh should remain white to cream-colored, firm, crisp and juicy, with the characteristic tart flavor of Granny Smith. Small lenticels and minor natural variations in surface coloration may occur.
Origin
Washington, Estados Unidos.
Granny Smith originated in Australia during the nineteenth century and was named after Maria Ann “Granny” Smith, who propagated the chance seedling from which the variety originated. It subsequently became one of the world's most recognizable green apples. Its distinctive coloration is associated with the persistence of chlorophyll in the skin, while its pronounced acidity and firm flesh structure contribute significantly to its culinary popularity. Washington's growing conditions favor firm, crisp fruit with the characteristic balance of acidity and sugars for which Granny Smith is internationally valued.
