Autumn King Grape | Bravante®
FOAM-TRAY ±19Lb
Vitis vinifera green table grapes, Autumn King variety, grown in California and marketed under the Bravante® brand. Autumn King is a late-season seedless variety developed through the USDA-ARS table grape breeding program in California to extend the availability of domestically grown green seedless grapes toward the end of the season. Bravante Produce officially lists Autumn King among its green seedless table-grape varieties. Bravante Produce
Autumn King is particularly distinguished by its very large berry size, firm and fleshy texture, and clean, sweet flavor. The USDA developed the variety as a late green grape capable of maintaining desirable sweetness and firmness during cold storage and distribution. Organoleptic Properties
Berries are large to very large, cylindrical, ovoid to slightly elongated, with smooth pale-green skin that may develop yellow-green tones as maturity progresses.
Flesh is firm, fleshy, juicy and crisp, with medium-thickness skin adhering well to the flesh. Flavor is predominantly sweet, clean and neutral, without an intense varietal aroma. In the original USDA evaluations, natural berries averaged approximately 9.8 g, illustrating the exceptionally large berry size characteristic of Autumn King. USDA ARS USDA ARS
It is commercially classified as seedless. Botanically, berries may contain two to three small aborted seed traces, which the USDA describes as small and generally unnoticeable when eaten. USDA ARS USDA ARS
Suggested Uses
Ideal for fresh consumption as a snack, lunch boxes, buffets, hospitality, restaurants and fruit bars. Its large berry size and crisp texture provide an excellent presentation for fruit and cheese boards, charcuterie, salads, bowls, yogurt, oatmeal and granola.
It may also be served well chilled or frozen as a refreshing snack and incorporated into fruit skewers, pastry applications, dessert decoration and gourmet presentations.
Format
Styrofoam box (C-UNC) containing approximately 8.6 Kg (19 lb) of fresh Autumn King grapes. The number, weight and configuration of inner bags may vary according to the grower's packing system.
Storage and Handling
Store preferably at approximately 0–1 °C (32–34 °F) and approximately 90–95% relative humidity, maintaining an uninterrupted cold chain.
Protect clusters from moisture loss, condensation and abrupt temperature fluctuations. Avoid excessive direct airflow over the fruit, as it may accelerate water loss, reduced turgidity and dehydration of both berries and rachis.
Autumn King was also selected for its favorable storage characteristics; USDA reports that the fruit can remain sweet and firm during cold storage, an especially valuable characteristic for a late-season table grape. Agricultural Research Magazine Agricultural Research Magazine
Quality and Selection Criteria
Select fresh, well-developed clusters with large, firm, crisp and uniform berries, good pedicel attachment and characteristic green coloration. The rachis should retain a fresh appearance without pronounced dehydration.
The whitish bloom naturally visible on the berry surface consists of protective fruit waxes and is not considered a defect. Avoid soft, shriveled, split or fermented berries, excessive juice leakage, pronounced berry shatter or mold.
Autumn King also exhibits very good berry attachment and relatively low postharvest shatter, characteristics documented in its original varietal description. USDA ARS USDA ARS
Season
A late-season variety. In California, Autumn King reaches maturity toward the end of the table-grape season; original Fresno evaluations placed maturity around the third week of October, approximately eight weeks after Thompson Seedless. Foundation Plant Services
Origin
California, United States.
Autumn King has a particularly interesting breeding history. It was developed in Fresno, California, by David Ramming and Ronald Tarailo of USDA-ARS from the cross A61-20 × B99-131, made in 1993 and selected in 1996. USDA ARS It was developed to provide the market with a very large, late-ripening green seedless table grape, extending the domestic season beyond cultivars such as Thompson Seedless. Autumn King is therefore an excellent example of conventional table-grape breeding, in which plants are crossed and selected to combine desirable characteristics such as berry size, practical seedlessness, firmness, sweetness and harvest timing. USDA ARS
