Jack pumpkin, or Jack-o’-Lantern type pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo), grown in Guanajuato, Mexico. This is the classic medium to large orange pumpkin primarily selected for carving, Halloween decorations and fall displays. This presentation is offered in mixed sizes, with individual pumpkins weighing approximately 4 to 10 Kg (8.8–22 lb) and measuring approximately 20 to 40 cm (8–16 in) in diameter, providing a versatile assortment for decorating, displaying and carving.

Organoleptic Properties

Medium to large fruit, generally round to slightly oval, with well-defined longitudinal ribs and a thick, firm stem. The mature rind develops an intense orange coloration, while the flesh ranges from yellow-orange to orange. Compared with cultivars specifically developed for culinary use, Jack-o’-Lantern pumpkins generally have a large internal cavity and relatively thinner walls, making them particularly convenient for cleaning and carving. The flesh is generally fibrous, with a mild vegetal aroma and slightly sweet flavor.

Suggested Uses

Particularly suitable for Halloween and Jack-o’-Lantern carving, as well as fall decorations, Día de Muertos, retail displays, entrances, events, centerpieces and seasonal commercial or residential environments. The mixed-size assortment allows smaller and medium fruit to be incorporated into decorative arrangements, while larger specimens can serve as focal pieces for carving and displays. Whole, sound pumpkins are also edible, although cultivars specifically selected for flesh quality, density and sweetness are generally preferred for culinary applications.

Format

Bulk (BLK) per kilogram. Mixed sizes ranging approximately from 4 to 10 Kg (8.8–22 lb) per fruit and 20 to 40 cm (8–16 in) in diameter. Natural variations in weight, diameter and shape may occur between individual pumpkins. Whole fruit selected for size, shape, color, rind firmness, integrity and stem quality.

Storage and Handling

Store whole pumpkins in a cool, dry and well-ventilated environment, protected from excessive moisture, condensation, impact damage and prolonged direct sunlight. For commercial storage, approximately 10–15 °C (50–59 °F) is recommended while avoiding excessively low temperatures and humid conditions. Do not carry large pumpkins solely by the stem, as their weight may cause stem separation and damage that can accelerate deterioration.

Quality and Selection Criteria

Mature, whole and firm fruit with a well-developed rind and uniform, intense orange coloration. For carving applications, symmetrical pumpkins with defined ribbing, a relatively uniform surface, stable base and strong, well-attached stem are preferred. Because this product is offered in mixed sizes, natural variations in shape and dimensions are acceptable within the approximate range of 4–10 Kg (8.8–22 lb) and 20–40 cm (8–16 in) in diameter. Fruit with soft areas, decay, mold, deep cracks, open wounds or significant mechanical damage should be rejected.

Origin

Guanajuato, Mexico.

Jack pumpkins grown in Guanajuato belong to the commercial group commonly known as Jack-o’-Lantern pumpkins, primarily consisting of Cucurbita pepo selections developed for desirable carving characteristics such as deep orange coloration, rounded shape, defined ribbing, a stable base, large internal cavity and strong stem. The mixed commercial range of 4 to 10 Kg (8.8–22 lb) provides versatility for everything from seasonal decorative arrangements to large centerpiece carvings. Although demand is particularly associated with Halloween, their distinctive appearance also makes them suitable for fall and Día de Muertos displays in Mexico.
